Assessments, Testing cards and Comment Cards:

We have been running a process to assist students and parents in gaining a clearer understanding of where corrections are required. Hopefully, this has helped to focus attention on the areas of the syllabus that need improvement.
From the September testing onwards, we will be stricter in ensuring that students take responsibility for addressing the fundamental corrections for the basic part of the syllabus. This will enable more time to be dedicated to teaching the new syllabus.
The basics are
Stance – Arm and leg position
Guard position – Static and in Patterns etc
Blocks – Correct execution, weight shift, narrowing body
Punches – correct height, elbow position, weight shift, use of hips
Kicks – correct target, chamber, retraction, weight shift, use of hips

Post each testing
Testing cards – this will identify minors that need correcting. The instructors will spend up to 2 classes working with the students on the corrections. After that the focus will be on the new syllabus.
Comment Cards – this will contain any minors from the testing card plus any other areas that need to be worked on.

Assessments – We will aim to carry out assessments
up to 4 weeks prior to the testing so please make sure you attend these. This will allow the instructors to identify students who haven’t made the corrects to their basics and so would not be able to test unless these are corrected.
up to 2 weeks prior to the testing. Any students who have not made their corrects will not be put forward for the testing.

Late Payment of Fees

A reminder that late fees will incur an additional £5 for each person if the payment has not cleared by the 7th of each month.
If you are not currently training, but wish to remain on our register, then there is a minimum £5/month to cover registration fees or you can elect to be archived. Note that there will be a £20 administrative fee to reactivate your membership.

Training Protocols

All students will be required to bring hand safety to each class. Yellow belts and above will also require foot safety.
Please purchase your own using the guide at the end of the newsletter.

It’s important that students dress correctly for training.
Uniforms should not be crumpled when attending the class.
If you wear a T-Shirt under the uniform then the colour needs to match the uniform which for most students will be white.
Belts need to be tied correctly.

Eligibility for Testing

To be eligible to test requires a student to have met 2 criteria.
First complete a minimum of classes as below
No stripe on the belt – 14 classes
A stripe on the belt – 7 classes

You can check the number of classes on our school website under the Members Section. The below link will take you to the page
Testing Status
On the page you can see the number of classes that you’ve attended since joining or since the last testing.
Then in the Next Grading column
If green then you’ll have enough classes by the testing date
If amber then you may be 1-2 classes short so try and attend a few extra classes
If red then you will be short by too many so best to work toward the next test date

Second must be competent with their syllabus. This will be an in class assessment carried out by the Instructors in the weeks running up to the test date. They will only recommend a student being put forward for the testing where they can see the student is carrying out the syllabus to a good standard.

Hand and Foot Safety

The current syllabus requires students carrying out defence drills to make light contact. The equipment can be purchased from wherever is most convenient for you.

– White belt senior and above, dipped foam hand safety.
– Yellow belt and above, dipped foam foot safety.

The Martial Art Shop site has a number of dipped foam gloves. Below is an example of the Blitz version but any of a similar style will be permitted. Boxing gloves are not allowed.

The Martial Art Shop site has a number of boots. Below is an example of the Blitz version but either this or similar dipped foam style will be permitted. These are designed to be generally worn without shoes and the fit needs to ensure that the toes are always covered. If wearing shoes then a larger size will be needed plus adjustments will generally need to be made. Please discuss this with an instructor in class if you want to do this.

Quote for the Month

“Know from the rivers in clefts and in crevices: those in small channels flow noisily, the great flow silent. Whatever’s not full makes noise. Whatever is full is quiet.”
